Frequently Asked Questions
Vital Statistics
Where is it?
Notley Tythe Barn, Notley Farm, Chearsley Road, Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, HP18 9ER.
When is it?
1st May 2026! Please arrive at 2pm, or at 7:30pm if you are just joining us for the evening.
You can see the schedule for the day here.
What’s the dress code?
Officially, formal - seize the excuse to dress up in something fancy! - but we encourage you to have fun with it. If funky patterened shirts/ties/dresses are your style, we can’t wait to see what you rock on the day, and if your dress has pockets you’ll be the envy of the crowd.
If the gender binary is not your friend, fear not! It’s not ours either: queer interpretations of the brief are extremely welcome.

Yes, but you’ll need to pick it up before 10:30am the next day.
Is it indoors? Outdoors? Paved? Will I get stuck in the grass if I wear pointy heels?
Weather permitting, we’ll be starting out on the lawn before moving inside the barn for dinner & dancing; there is also a small, covered patio area outside.

Can I bring a +1?
Only if it says “+1” on your invitation!
Can I bring my dog/cat/hyena?

Does the bar take cash or card?
Both!
Will there be food?
Plenty! We’re having canapés, a sit-down dinner, and some extra food in the evening. Please reach out to us if you need specific details.
I have a dietary requirement! Can I eat the food?
Please make sure you’ve let us know in your RSVP, and confirm to us that you’ve filled in the Notley dietary form! The venue’s catering team have a thorough process for handling dietary requirements, and will make sure to speak to you directly on the day before serving dinner.
Please note that Notley’s kitchen handles both nuts and shellfish. If you have a nut or shellfish allergy, they will ask you to sign a declaration that they’ve informed you of this.
If you’d like more information, get in touch with Nicole or Ben.
Civil Partnerships
Is this a wedding?
No - it’s a party celebrating a civil partnership. We’ll be wrapping up the legal paperwork the week before, so there won’t be any kind of ceremony on the day itself — this is all about having a great time with the people we love.
That said, we’ve built the party out of all the things we enjoy most about weddings, so the vibe will be quite similar.
Why isn’t it a wedding?
We’re just not wedding people! But we love a good excuse to party with all the awesome people we know.
What’s the difference between a marriage and a civil partnership?
In short: the weight of history. In legal terms, in the UK in the 21st century, there’s not much practical difference between the two, but we didn’t really feel that “being married” was the thing for us.
If you want to read up on the nitty-gritty details of the legalities, there’s a GOV UK page laying them out here. There’s also more information on the topic at Equal Civil Partnerships here.
Are you married / spouses / husband & wife now?
Nope! We’ll still be referring to ourselves simply as “partners”, and we’d love if you would stick with that, too.
Should we buy you a gift?
Please don’t feel any obligation to do so - after over a decade living together, we already have far too much stuff! That said, if you’re still keen to do something for us, we’d love for you to donate to TBD CHARITY TBD LINK on our behalf.
What’s a “civil partyship”?
A fantastic term for a civil partnership party that we shamelessly stole from some friends who had one recently. Thank you, Sarah & Tom!
